I attended the press preview for Cocktails in the City at Elixir Tonics and Treats, a few weeks ago. The premise of the event was a show down between the hip bars of Northern Quarter and the swanky bars of Spinningfields. If you live in Manchester or regularly visit you would know how very different these two areas are. The drinks we got to sample at the event from the bars lived up to the expectation of each area. Glitz, glamour and lots of dry ice from the Spinningfields set vs quirk, alt and even a plastic bag from NQ.
At the end of the night we voted on which area served the best drinks and whilst both sides put up a decent fight, Spinningfields took the crown. I think this was partly due to the fact the bar men and woman brought along all of their friends to cheer them on, and the Spinningfields lot probably had 10 more friends. Either way, I left the event totally tipsy or maybe drunk, and this was on a school night (well, work night - but it doesn't sound as good)!
The main event is this thursday and friday, May 19th & 20th at Granada Studios. Fab location, if you've never been defo check it out. Recently saw Skepta at the Location and it was perfect...warehouse chic (if that's a thing).
We have been promised that Cocktails in the City Manchester will be bigger and better this year. The stars of Manchester’s thriving bar scene, 24 in total, are coming together to compete for best cocktail, best bar and best experience and it seems that they are pulling out all the stops to win! If the preview is anything to go by, the event is set to be a such and could make the perfect pre-game for a night out after .
Will the winners of 2015, Mr Coopers, Cane and Grain and Elixir Tonic and Treats, hold on to their titles? Or will newcomers El Gato Negra or Cottonopolis steal the crown? I'll be there to find out...
